Changzhou Museum – Historical Cultural Hall of Dragon City

Venue Overview

Established in 1958, the Changzhou Museum opened its new building in 2006, covering a total floor area of 28,000 square meters. As a comprehensive regional museum, it integrates collection, research, exhibition, and educational functions. The museum houses tens of thousands of cultural relics and specimens spanning from the Neolithic Age to modern times, including 27 national first-grade cultural relics. The collection features bronzes, ceramics, lacquerware, calligraphy, paintings, jades, and more, comprehensively showcasing the historical and cultural development of the Changzhou region.

Permanent Exhibitions

  • “Soaring Dragon of Central Wu” Historical and Cultural Exhibition: This exhibition follows the main thread of Changzhou’s historical development through sections such as “Prehistoric Civilization,” “Shang and Zhou Dynasties’ States,” “Qin and Han Unification,” “Wei and Jin Elegance,” “Sui and Tang Golden Age,” “Song and Yuan Prosperity,” and “Ming and Qing Zenith.” Featuring over 800 cultural relics, the exhibition highlights painted pottery from the Neolithic Weidun Site, bronze ware from the Spring and Autumn Period Yancheng Site, Song Dynasty lacquerware, Yuan Dynasty porcelain, and Ming-Qing calligraphy and painting masterpieces. These artifacts vividly recreate the historical evolution of Changzhou from ancient times to the modern era.
  • “The Wonders of Nature” Natural Resources Exhibition: This display showcases the rich natural resources of the Changzhou region, divided into sections such as “Geological Evolution,” “Biodiversity,” and “Mineral Resources.” Exhibits include dinosaur fossils donated by China Dinosaur Park, rare animal and plant specimens, and geological mineral samples. Through interactive experiences and multimedia presentations, visitors can gain knowledge of natural sciences and appreciate the marvels of the natural world.

  • Southern Song Dynasty Gold-engraved Lotus-petal Lacquer Lian with Figure and Floral Motifs: A Grade-One National Cultural Relic and a masterpiece of Song Dynasty lacquerware. This lotus-petal-shaped lian (cosmetic case) features exquisite qiangjin (incised gold) craftsmanship, depicting figures and floral patterns. With its refined technique and remarkable preservation, it serves as vital material evidence for studying Song Dynasty lacquer art and social culture.
  • Ming Dynasty Wang Fu’s “Withered Trees, Bamboo, and Rocks: A representative work by the renowned Ming painter Wang Fu. The painting centers on withered trees, bamboo, and rocks, executed with concise brushwork and profound artistic conception. It exemplifies Wang Fu’s unique style and stands as a classic of Ming Dynasty literati painting.
